Thematically the album is about fears of artificial intelligence, the rise of fascism and
how these might be echoed in the past, in the modernism of the early 20th century, through inspirations including Wire, Japanese erotic art and Kraftwerk. This theme is fully represented by the strident title track, acting as an accompaniment to the original play that gave us the word robot, Rossum’s Universal Robots by Karel Čapek. Among the warnings sung by the robots, such as “What the hell is left for you to do? When artificial life can do everything better than you can”, we get the line “You insist on pissing on the very things you need, man”, which is an interesting echo of a line from The Angels Are Voyeurs, the opening track of his breakthrough album Tender Pervert: “He sees the way we tamper with the things we most depend on”, in that case, an observation made by God of his creation.
